We need more of Dan Barker, John Loftus, and the like. I will go out on a limb here, but I truly believe that if we spread the word out on atheism for those who want to know, "atheism" will gain a lot of ground. Therefore, we will accomplish reason, and within reason we will eliminate dogmatist beliefs.

There's no contradiction between the two passages of Acts you've mentioned. (To make a long story short: there's a reason not everyone's a prophet; and there's also a reason we're Trinitarians, not Binitarians -- some basics of comparative religions also come here to mid).

John,

Add Godless to the long list of books I'm not-so-patiently waiting to read. Like Mr. Barker, I can attest that the moment when you wake up and "come back to yourself" is every bit as profound and earth-shaking as the original "conviction." Nearly every ex-believer will say they've experienced both and have a basis for comparison.

I think a great analogy would be to say that the original religious conversion experience is like diving into a cool, pristine lake and experiencing relief and refreshment ... but then getting a cramp and being stuck under the water far too long. When you finally break the surface and draw air back into your lungs, you find you now know what real refreshment is.
