Recommended Books by Evangelical Scholars
The following are books written by evangelical scholars that I, as a religious skeptic, highly recommend to evangelical Christians. Obviously I will not agree with everything written but these authors demonstrate the many problems with evangelical views of the Bible and the natural world.
- Kenton Sparks, God's Word in Human Words: An Evangelical Appropriation of Critical Biblical Scholarship.
- Vincent Bacote, Laura Miguelez, Dennis Okholm, eds., Evangelicals & Scripture: Tradition, Authority and Hermeneutics.
- John H. Walton, Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament: Introducing the Conceptual World of the Hebrew Bible.
- Craig Bartholomew, C. Stephen Evans, Mary Healy, Murray Rae, eds., "Behind" the Text: History and Biblical Interpretation.
- Darrel R. Falk, Coming to Peace With Science.
- Stephen J. Godfrey and Christopher R. Smith, Paradigms on Pilgrimage: Creationism, Paleontology and Biblical Interpretation.
- Davis A. Young and Ralph F. Stearley, The Bible, Rocks and Time: Geological Evidence for the Age of the Earth.
- Mark Noll, The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind.
- Alan G. Padgett & Patrick Keifert, eds., But is It All True? The Bible and the Question of Truth.
- Scot McKnight and Hauna Ondrey, Finding Faith, Losing Faith: Stories of Conversion and Apostasy.

Excellent list Anthony! This is probably more helpful to Christians who read this Blog than a list of atheist books, since we're so far removed from their thinking.
I just added this post to a link where I challenge conservative Christians to read outside their safety zones. See here.
Thanks for this post. I've always wondered what the 'competition' (heh) considered great books.
Do you have a list as well, Mr. Loftus?
