Brilliantly Stupid: How To Kill a Creationist Bill
On January 31, 2012, the Indiana Senate voted 28-22 in favor of Senate Bill 89, which was previously amended to read: “The governing body of a school corporation may offer instruction on various theories of the origin of life. The curriculum for the course must include theories from multiple religions, which may include, but is not limited to, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Scientology.” As a Hoosier from Indiana I'm pleased to learn this bill is now dead in the water. Apparently the legislators initially wanted a creationist bill that could pass Constitutional muster, but along the way the amended bill essentially killed itself. The original bill stated: “The governing body of a school corporation may require the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life, including creation science, within the school corporation.” What my Senator Dennis Kruse wanted was for the Biblical theory to be given equal time in the schools based on an utterly stupid reading of the Genesis texts. But after being amended what he got AND DEFENDED was what he deserved, a religion class not a science class, and as such, would be ruled against in the Supreme Court. Can you imagine a science teacher giving lessons to students about the Scientology origin of human life and calling that science? The problem is that this amended bill actually passed in the Senate. What morons! The amendment was brilliantly stupid though, for it essentially revealed what was going on and it is not science. Bravo for brilliantly stupid people! We need more of them. If we can't have brilliant people then let the stupid ones kill their own bill.
So, if another bill like this is proposed in another state learn from Indiana. If it looks like an equal time creationist bill has enough votes to pass, then merely amend it so that people can see clearly what is being proposed, a religion class. Just insert into the bill these words: “The governing body of a school corporation may offer instruction on various theories of the origin of life.
