60 Minutes On a Historic Film: Market Street 1906

Morley Safer reports on a mystery that was solved about a 100-year-old film that we now know was made on San Francisco's Market Street just days before the 1906 earthquake. Link
I find this story fascinating for it's a film of San Francisco days before an earthquake destroyed what we're looking at. It's like we have detailed foreknowledge of what's to take place in just a few days. We know when looking at it the people in the film will suffer, many of them will die. What would YOU do if you had that foreknowledge? What did God do? Are we better than God? I would think so. For we would warn them.

God broke the world for a purpose, to create a context for redemption of humanity. If he is always shielding us from the brokenness before he redeems it and us in full, then it isn't the case that that purpose is taken seriously.

of course, I doubt that that specific earthquake was necessary for that purpose. But if there aren't those types of earthquakes, then we aren't in the world that was broken for the purpose.

@ Rob R

Then why did he break it the five times before this? Why wipe out nearly every lifeform on the planet AT LEAST FIVE times before He even got around to 'Creating' us? To what purpose? How does that provide a context for Redemption?

Clearly your God just gets tired of his creation and wipes it out. Kind of like we do when we get bored of a game of Sim City.

Huh?!?

I have no clue what you are talking about.

The biblical narrative has a flood. Don't know what else you'd be talking about.

Jeffrey,

The 3.8 billion years of plant and animal death that came before the creation of humans provided for the needs of civilization. Through death and decay, we get large biodeposits of sand, limestone, marble, topsoil, coal, oil, and natural gas. The civilization that enables Christians to carry out Christ's command to take the gospel to all the world is based on the abundance of theese things.

I would have a place prepared for them - heaven. And those who hated me or other people would not enter in.

Absolutely fascinating. It almost seems like a staged Hollywood film. Where can the full length film be found? I'll have to check the youtubes.

There is another part of this documentary that is intriguing... that is, the search for, and finding of, evidence. Look how much this guy was able to find out from this film based on just a few minutes of footage. There were so many small, near-invisible clues about when it was made, where it was made, and an enormous amount of information about the people and culture which lead to further sources of information found in dark corners of the library. Our ability to observe and detect evidence as humans is an incredible, amazing trait.

From a film like this, we see that the physical world finds a way to leave evidence of its history. God, on the other hand, has a difficult time with this.

God warns us about hell. I guess by this view, he's doing really well on that point.
