Barack Obama slams the Bible

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy — chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

I have always had my suspicions that he is an atheist. His mother, father, and stepfather were all indifferent or hostile toward religion.

This one gave me the biggest laugh:

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said.

Shhhh! Don't tell everybody!

It doesn't surprise me though. And this is what America deserves given the direction it has taken. When this atheist gets in office it will precipitate Armageddon. All of the prophecies of old will be fulfilled. And there is nothing we can do to stop it. What has been foretold will come to pass!

I hope your lives are right with God! And my God have mercy on our souls!

I think Dobson is more of an atheist than Obama. Obama seems to have some sense of what the Bible actually emphasizes, whereas Dobson presumably cannot be entirely ignorant on the subject yet continues to conveniently quote-mine the Bible to support his right-wing agenda.

You may also like some recent posts of mine on how I know Obama isn't the antichrist and why Christians who think he is should vote for him. :)

Dobson continues the fine tradition of accusing others of what he himself is guilty of.

I don't like Obama, largely because I think he's naive about just what running and being President entails (NOBODY can stay separate from the machine). He can talk about changing the system all he wants, but the fact is, he's far more likely to end up being heavily influenced and controlled by the extreme left who are as stupid as the religious right is intolerant and evil.

That said, if he had the balls to come out and admit he was an atheist (I don't know if he is one or not), I'd vote for him.

Ya I had quit the chuckle after reading Dobbs's comments.

I think if Obama were an atheist that would another positive reason to vote for him.

Dobson, you goof! Such a funny guy...too bad it's not on purpose.

This just renewed my respect for Obama. I certainly don't agree with him on everything, but hell, if this is how he feels, he must be pretty damn mature and intelligent.

Obama isn't slamming the bible, however--he's slamming people who use the bible to justify anything.

WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) or The reason I want to go to Hell is this is where Jesus went right after he died. God sent Jesus straight to Hell and Jesus "busted Hell wide open" (see 1Peter 3: 18 -22)!

And, as the saying goes; “If it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me!” Lets all follow Jesus’ example and straight go to Hell when we die!

Obama claims he is a Christian. Have you not watched the news lately.

He is probably one of the more liberal ones on the other posts.

If Obama came out and said he was an Atheist, he would probably be assassinated before even becoming president, rather than after as I fear. All it takes is one religious nut to feel that he was being mislead by a man claiming to be a Christian. I prefer that he has freethinking ideals no matter what religion he claims to be.

This speech by Obama is two years old. I read the whole thing, and politics aside, I think it is a good, ecumenical speech. And I don't see how he is 'slamming the Bible'.

Okay, so he was slamming biblical literalism and fundamentalism.

Obama seems to think laws should be passed based on values of the people - not on values dictated by a particular interpretation of God.

For example, I'm against partial birth abortions unless the mother's health is at risk. So are most Christians. As people, we have he same values, despite being based on different foundations.

Either there will be enough people who share these values to vote legislation in effect or there will not. Brining God into the mix just clouds the issue and causes conflict.

It seems that Dobson's complaint is, without special treatment, he'd need to actually make a case for his values, instead of asserting them.

I'm with ya pal..I would like to leave this country if I could get out with my guns and savings.

Anyone got any ideas on how to leave this shit-hole country without having to declare everything that you own?

Reguardless of Obama's personal beliefs, the fact is that the Old Testament law was fulfilled (satisfied), in christ, and Christians today are under no obligation to continue to judge themselves by its harsh demands (Romans 6:14, Galatians 5:18).
Christ came to earth and took all the penalties required by the law, so anyone who accepts what he did on their behalf could be free from the law (Romans 8:2).
The Bible says that the law was put in place to lead us to Christ (Galatians 3:24), and that's all, because it could NEVER save anyone (Hebrews 10:3-5).
In the sermon on the mount, Jesus demonstrated this by showing how difficult it would be to keep the whole law, and the fact that the intent of the law is even more important than the law itself.
The fact is, Christ's kingdom, his government, is not a physical one, anyway, but a spiritual one (John 18:36).
The kingdom of God cannot be advanced by politics or the sword (Matthew 26:52).
America can never be completely "under God," until he returns. The crusades, the inquisition, these are all examples of trying to impose some kind of perverted "chrisitanity" on all people. THis is not what God intended.

I'm disgusted that our President slammed the Bible. Who is he to quote the Old Testament? Has he read the Quran? Has he seen their laws? The Bible is not merely the Old Testament. In it, it presents the NEW COVENANT with God. One that Jesus presents. It has nothing to do with sacrifices. I hate this holier than thou philosophy of our President. He certainly has not got my vote. You can attempt to debunk Christianity - but you will not because it is the TRUTH, whether you like it or not. But, you will find out - someday. It may be when you've taken your final breath, but you will find out.
