Christian Propaganda in the Classical World
In order to compete in an ancient world where everyone was superstitious (religious) and all human thinking swam daily in a vast sea of religions; where good forces (Gods) or evil forces (demons) were seen as either directly or indirectly contributing to all human suffering and death; religion was the science of the both ancient though medieval thought that explained why things happened the way they did.
Since whole cities could be devastated by a plague or just ones neighbor could be signaled out to be afflicted either by sickness or some other natural disaster (birth defect, sickness or a lighting strike causing fire or death), supernatural causations were totally seen as “no brainier” from the general population to many philosophers.
While the ancient Israelite beliefs where limited to “Covenants” and the religions of the Greco-Roman empire were old established main stream “church” like religions (by the way, church / “ekkliesia” is a borrowed pagan term), the new cult of Christianity, just like high yield Junk Bonds, pulled members out of these old stagnated orthodox religions into a belief where the average poor illiterate person had a chance to become a divinity too just like Jesus and the Roman Emperor: Deified in the here and now while working “Signs and Wonders” and, best of all, were said to never died.
Signs and Wonders WERE the only proofs Christianity could promise over and above the other religions that the common person could have right here and now so, who in their right mind would not want to be a god just like Jesus (being a Christian, even today, means being “Christ like” or being a wonder working messiah like figure yourself).
Since about 99.9% of the world that early Christians proselytized from were already religious, Christianity had to offer something totally new and different to gain converts. Now (as advertised or ‘As Seen of TV’), you too could become a God working miracles just like the Jesus, the emperor and the Classical demi-gods / semi-gods (This being the proofs promised by Jesus in the Gospels, but today practiced mostly by Faith Healers).
However, if you did NOT want the “carrot” of being be a wonder working Christian here on earth, then you would get the “stick” of roasting forever (Thus, if you think it’s bad for you now, just you wait and you’ll wish you had of converted)!
As stated above, in a world where all sickness was said to be caused by the Gods (or demons)(often for wrong actions as punishment); where the reality of severe pain of being burnt either in daily cooking or in fires for warmth; where the daily struggle to find clean clear drinking water form wells and stream not cursed by demons or the Gods (remember they had no knowledge of micro-organisms) meant life or death. The claim where one MUST live after death in a place that incorporated all the real fears and realities of this life, was a great tool in evangelizing propaganda that the other competing religions in the Greco=Roman west just did not have.
[Here is a hard fact! Especially note the fierily burning trash dump of the Semitic term and Hebrew place called “Gehenna”. This was a place where the general population could actually see the fires, smoke and smell the rotting and burning flesh of dead animals along with unclaimed human bodies. Palestinian Christianity used this concept to strike fear in the people of that location, but , once the Christian religion moved west into Asia Minor, Gehenna was totally dropped for the Classical Greek religious concept Hades / Hell which itself was reworked to strike fear in the Hellenistic populations.}
In conclusion, the claims and promises of a once powerful Christianity fueled by human fears and superstitions also being re-enforced by the lack of knowledge (modern science) which preached that all natural disasters were from either God or Satan (a modification of the old demons(note here within the last 300 years the Witch trials in Europe and Salem, Mass.)) is a parade which has forever past.
Christianity has conceded so much of its mystical word view that it now appears weak and deflated much like King Triton who lost all his mighty powers to the Sea Witch in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”.
Without Christianity’s living proofs of what the Gospels calls “Signs and Wonders” no longer able to compete with our scientific knowledge, all its reality (now known as dogmas / doctrines ) are moved into some vague and mysterious “after life” untouchable by “sinful man’s” science and technology begin relocated in either Heaven (for the righteous) or Hell (for the people who refuse to join in on this superstition in the modern world).
The “Bible Christians” who show up here at DC to argue the “truths” of Christianity, appear like the Cain in Genesis 4: 13; they seem to be forever cursed to wonder in a strange new land where their burden of a past mystical claims now seems almost too much to bear.
With hope fueled by faith, they struggle on just like Pilgrim in John Bunyan’s Pilgrims Progress, but whose faith, like the ancient Gods, are superstitions that die hard.

I'm struck once again at how posts on my blog and this one regularly converge on a common subject...
James, the springboard for this post was a Festschrift honoring the late Harvard professor of Early Christianity, Dieter Georgi:
Religious Propaganda and Missionary Competition in the New Testament World: Essays Honoring Dieter Georgi
In E.J Brill’s 1997 Supplement to Novum Testamentum edited by Lukas Bormann, K. Bormann, K. Del Tredici, and Angela Standhartinger.
Anything else is the providence of the gods!
Nice post. I am interested in the beliefs of the ancient Greeks and I know that they weren't christianized as smoothly as out history testbooks would have us believe!
It is King Triton in The Little Mermaid, from what I recall
Thanks for the correction, "just us - just me". It's been some time since I viewed The Little Mermaid.
I have the first video Disney produced, where, at the end of the movie, the minister was drawn with a full ejection as the Little Mermaid walked down the deck of the ship. I did not believe this until I froze framed the section, and, sure enough, there it was!
With complaints from angry mothers, Disney soon issued a revised version and offer a new video to anyone who would return the “X” rated version.
But as a “godless atheist who has no morals or ethics“, I kept mine!
Yeah, moral Christian mothers who would skin Disney for producing that but wouldn't masturbate to it. And who need to keep facts about sex away from their Christian children. I'd show it to my kid (if I had one) anytime, with the right info to go with it.
Don't think I've seen that version of The Little Mermaid though.
But at the same time, the continued growth of Christianity proves that superstition and faked miracles do not form the basis of modern faith. The reason I--or anyone--believe in God has little to do with pillars of flame and lightning; instead, my faith is based off the concept that God loves us and wants us to love him--and others, of course.
There were plenty of fraudulent "wonders" in the past centuries, sure, but they are not the pillar that Christianity stands on. It is not human-created miracles that make Christianity the force that it is today, but the offer of an intimate connection with a loving God.
At any rate, thanks for your post. It's always helpful to hear new religious perspectives.
Kenneth Burchfiel writes: "It is not human-created miracles that make Christianity the force that it is today, but the offer of an intimate connection with a loving God."
Why would I want that, when I don't even want an "intimate connection" with almost every human I run across in this world? While I could see doing business with a god that has something of tangible value to offer me (though I have no use for a flock of productive sheep like an Old Testament patriarch), I don't see the point of getting any more emotionally involved with it than I would with my auto mechanic.
@Kenneth Burchfiel
If superstition is not the base of christianity almost all of you would become deists.
Outside superstition (backed up by authority) there is nothing that tells you God wants a relationship with you, that god is good (giving the suffering in this world), that there is a satan, original sin, or that the bible is worth more than its weight in toilet paper.
Just like there is nothing outside superstition to believe that god (the "Allah" version) wants to blow yourself up or to cover your woman from head to toe.
"…you too could become a God working miracles just like the Jesus and the Classical Gods / Semi-gods."
I don’t think so! Any miracle worked through a Christian happens by Jesus Christ. As a Christian, we can strive to be Christ-like, but we will never be the Christ. By our Faith in Jesus, we may be chosen as a vehicle for a miracle to be performed, but a human is not capable of performing a miracle under their own power.
Also, our Church is currently working on a documentary to show real live people who have been healed. Their testimony combined with before and after medical records and testimony from the physicians that provided their medical care will be recorded to provide current time proof of the healing powers of Jesus. So, contrary to your statements, miracles and signs are happening in this age too.
As time goes on, things change, customs change. That doesn’t mean that Christianity is no longer valid. I don’t understand how Christianity is seen as mystical or as a superstition. If it were, isn’t a bit much to swallow the massive numbers that have jumped on board the “superstition”…
@Heather, when an innocent child that got blind because of a schrapnel from a bomb that hit his school is not healed doesn't say anything to you? But when someone gets rid of cancer while taking medicines it speaks volumes? How convenient. In the civilised world we get to the age of 70 because god is performing miracles but millions die in africa of starvation. Christians claim to have Jesus as a role model and Jesus sacrificed for them. So if you get very sick (i hope you don't) instead of praying for your own health use this: "God please let me with my pain but send mana to africa instead!". That will be a double-miracle:
1. god clearly bending the laws of nature
2. a christian not being self-centered
You know what they say: "Faith can move mountains" :)
Just change "supernaturalism" to "magicalism" and see how it reads.
Logosfera - The horrors of this earth are created by man. And, just so you know, I never pray for my will to be done, I pray for His will to be done, regardless. I will never understand how or why God chooses to do some things and not to do others, and I don't want to know.
heather,
some horrors are caused by chance.
if gods will is going to be done anyway, you are just wasting your time.
Does god DO anything? if he does then doesn't that affect our free will? If free will is so important to cause the fall of man, why would he keep mucking around with it?
@heather
so you don't want to know. you're not in search for the truth but personal comfort. you understand that this approach disqualifies ALL of your remarks as having any weight in the search for truth.
why are you trying to offer answers to questions posed here when you're obviously not in it for the truth? do you really think you got so lucky that you found the truth even if you didn't search for it?
Logosfera - Oh, I found the truth, Jesus Christ, he lived and died and rose again. (I know kinda preachy, but the truth all the same.)I don't understand how you claim that I am not looking for the truth, or giving answers to questions posted here based on the truth I believe.
Sometimes I think that people find it too easy to follow Jesus, it is very simple in fact. Is that why you think that it must be ridiculous to have found that truth?
Lee - I pray that I or people I am praying for will allow His will be done. You are right, His will can and will be done, if we don't get into the way. We muck it up because we attempt to change things into what suits us. I am sure that you can at least agree that people can make really stupid choices...
@heather
I will never understand how or why God chooses to do some things and not to do others, and I don't want to know
This is someone who doesn't care about the truth would say. If you don't want to know why some god does than your input here is worthless. There is no difference between you and a muslim that blows himself up in a public square saying "I don't know why god wants me to do this. All I want is my virgins"
Heather, one name for you: Apollonius of Tyana.
Why Jesus of all the prophets that were in that area in that time? And now that I think of it, why that area and why that time? There were prophets and relgious leaders in other times and areas too.
Just me-Just me - If not Jesus, how is it that there are thousands of Christian denominations that put him at the cornerstone? I don't think there are thousands of people that worship Apollonius of Tyana. Hmmmm. Explain to me that after thousands of years massive amounts of people believe in who Jesus is, the son of God. If Jesus was not the son of God, he would have gone by the wayside many, many moons ago...
@heather
Paraphrasing "Give me an emperor like Constantine and I'll turn the whole world into Xenu worshipers".
Look at North Koreea, it took about 30-40 years to make a whole country worship a person that is not even a legend. Imagine what you can do in an ignorant world like the ancient world if you have a legend.
I recommend reading http://www.logicalfallacies.info/ so you don't use the appeal to popularity as a valid argument.
Truly, I could use any argument known to man, and someone would and could discredit it. Call it pointless, my postings, it doesn't bother me. I only post here because if one person reads something I have written, and it stikes something within them that makes them consider that Jesus is real, well, I am happy.
Heather wrote:

On the other hand, after two thousand years, two out of every three people in the world still do not believe that Jesus was the son of God. While he was alive, probably at least 99.999% of all the people on Planet Earth did not believe he was the son of God. Heck, whether even Jesus himself thought that he was the Son of God (as opposed to a son of God) is, I think, open to legitimate question.
@Heather,
we already established that you're not here for the truth. you now say you're not here even for the reasoning. it seems that you're only here to make yourself feel good, to reinforce the ideea that you're doing god's work. yes heather, god, the creator of the universe, is so impotent that he needs a person with no reasoning skills to spread his message. what a "great" god.
I rather enjoy talking about the God of my heritage. Talking about Him might change minds. Might change my own. But the point is taking pleasure in the topic of discussion. I'm sure skeptics and debunkers have an equally hedonistic purpose. Some folks delight in being snide and belittling. Generally, I find that attitude strong among groups of Christian apologists. I'd be shocked to find it absent among ex-apologists, though I doubt logosferatu has that particular biography.
I find the sharing of biography (testimony) and bias helps the search for truth. Folks who fear to be vunerable and speak as if from up high presume, I guess, to be the truth. Always a mistaken presumption, in my experience.

:) Wonder how much the Church paid the physicians they enjoy a few extra coins in their pockets ,or if Christian themselves they might be interested in earning a few extra browny points for being involved in conversion tactics.Even if it contains deceit,heavenly deceit (only) of course.Theres a difference! the God/s make allowances for heavenly deceit,ask Benny Hinn he will tell you.Saving souls matters most.
Gotta go ! im off to earn browny points for my time coming in heaven.Think i`ll set myself up with a young audience grab a chicken and secretly pop its head under its wings,swing it around a bit until its good and dizzy.Then quickly pop out from behind a curtain onto the stage and place it on the ground in front of them looking perfectly dead.And pray over it until it is resurrected.
Gandolf - Your post is very bothersome to me. I find lying to be horrible, Christian or no Christian. To me, as a human, you are nothing if you don't have honesty if you don't have your word. I don't care what you are, who you are, why you are...to imply that people in my community would make such things up is beyond me. If you don't want to see or believe, fine, you are welcome to your opinion. I would appreciate more respect directed at me than being associated with liars...
heather if you are associated with belief in the bible and in God/s
You are associated with lies.The bibles full of deceit and stories made up by men.
And if you think religious folk are not involved in total shams .It only shows how easy it is to fool certain people.
I give respect only where i think it has been earned.
Demand all you like .
Gandolf - I demanded nothing of you, or anyone else for that matter. Believe me, I have been around and I have seen it all. I have been lied to and lied about, I am not so stupid as to realize what mankind can be...I give respect to those until they remove it themselves, which you have done quite nicely.
