Brian the Family Guy Dog is an Atheist

Do you think this is good exposure for atheists in general?

Brian's atheism was hinted at in another episode, in which Brian falls in love with a girl he met at the book store, when they both reach for the last copy of The God Delusion.

I appreciated that the writers simply had Brian state his views, without using the episode as an opportunity to slam nonbelievers. I also appreciated that Brian held his ground, even under massive pressure (He even managed to re-deconvert Meg.) And the ending was perfect! (We do, after all, know who the "gods" of the Family Guy universe are!)

I don't know if I would call it good exposure due to the way it was presented. It targets religion as thoughtless idiocy a bit hard.

I mean, i think its all ridiculous bunk, but the only people who might reflect positively on it are already atheists or skeptics. Its just not going to change the opinions or prejudices of the largest problem demographics.

For what it's worth, the way in which atheists are handled by society was satirized in way that should enlighten some on the plight that is typically felt as revenge for non-belief.

I don't disagree spacecataz. I just don't think it will spin that way in those circles.

The book burning was a bit much.

At the end Brian de-converts Meg. I guess she was never really saved, eh? Ha

Considering Family Guy's likely target audience, I don't think that "exposure" is the right term. Most of the people watching it are likely atheists already - or at least not people that are going to take offense at it. I know I watched Family Guy as a Christian, but a) I understood that they TRY to be offensive, and b) I probably would have laughed off this episode as a straw man.

Yeah thats true. Did you see how easily Brian deconverted Meg? Bill Craig would have owned his ass.

I'm on the AFA mailing list, and of course this show is on their sh*t list. Unfortunately, it seems one's sense of humor decreases in direct proportion to the degree that one's embrace of religious fundamentalism increases.

Honestly, have you ever met a witty or humorous fundie? I haven't. They're as dry as a 90-year old woman's underpants.

You obviously don't know many 90-year old women.
