Start You Own Recovering Religionist Group

If you are one of the millions of people who have determined that religion no longer has a place in your life, this may be the right spot for you. Many people love the social support they get from religion, but can’t deal with all the crazy ideas they are required to espouse. It can be difficult to leave a religion because family and culture put so much pressure on us to stay and pretend to believe. If this is you, we want to help you find your way out. We are Recovering Religionists™, people who have given religion our best shot but just can’t bring ourselves to believe in virgin births, resurrections, 2000 year old miracles and the “power of prayer.” We are recovering Baptists, Mormons, Catholics, Jehovah Wittnesses, Hindus, Moslems, Lutherans, Pentecostals, Evangelicals, and more. Additionally...people who can't bring themselves to believe in wholesale murder, torture, repression of ideas, child "education" based on myths and fairy tales, who cannot accept any rational justification for the argument that faith is compatable with science, who cannot condone larceny, persecution of non-believers, crusades, and the need for some church to tell us what we can and cannot do in our own bedrooms.

Glad you started this group. I'd like to get one going as well if I can ever find the time :)

I think it's important that the people involved are those who have previously been seriously involved in and devoted to the particular religious culture, and in the last 5 years or so. Someone tried to start a similar group here in Portland, and over half the people who showed up had never personally been involved in a controlling religious culture, and had no clue about what that involves emotionally. I think they thought that just because they were "anti-religion" they should be involved. I didn't find their presence helpful at all, whereas those who leaving a life inside of this culture were a great help and support to each other.

It's similar to a tee-totaller who's never had a drink in their life, trying to understand what it's like to be roaring drunk every night, trying to go sober! I've never been a drinker, so I wouldn't understand that situation at all.

Off topic, John, but I see that you tried to post a comment on Triablogue in response to the blog's childish "critique" of a book that you're involved with, but were banned for some reason.

I've checked out many Christian blogs over the years, and I have to say that Steve Hays has to be be the most remarkably vemonous and hate-filled people I've ever encountered online. How he reconciles his behavior with his alleged belief in the Christian God is beyond my ability to understand these things. I can't begin to imagine what has brought that man to a point of constant and unending rage against anyone who dares to disagree with him in even the slightest degree. I can only assume that he was beaten severely as a kid.

They are angry Christians and find justification in the Bible for their rage. Seems like one can find anything in the Bible he wants to find, doesn't it?

If you try to post a comment then you can see what I wrote. I was banned more than a year ago because I fought fire with fire. Who cares with the likes of them.
