Hey John,

I wonder what your thoughts are on this blog post I wrote recently:

This is not humorous at all. I am in awe at the incredulous disrespect.

Brian_E said...

Actually that is quite humorous, and I fail to see the disrespect. Christians just love to throw around that disrespect card every time someone says or does anything that questions their beliefs. Sorry, you don't get a free pass just cause you're popular.

I laughed and found it funny up to the point where they kidnapped the cancer patient. i found tht funny too, I just decided to quit before it might've gotten blasphemous.

I didn't ask for a free pass. Correction, Brian E.: I didn't throw the 'disrespect card' because they are questioning my beliefs. I threw it because they are making a mockery of something I hold very close to my heart. I held hands with family and prayed hard for my brother before he died in February at age 27. Just because he died doesn't mean my prayers didn't have value to myself, to my family, and to my brother. Just because someone doesn't believe in God, they don't get a free pass to walk all over good and decent people who do without being called out as 'disrespectful'. And I have every right to call them out as such.

Imagine you walk into the hospital room where my family is praying over my dying brother and you laugh and say sarcastically: "Ye-aahh, like that's gonna work, ha-ha."

That is, essetially, what is being done here. To what end?

@ Double A
Just because you hold certain beliefs near and dear to your heart doesn't automagically make them worthy of respect.

If you think this video is equivalent to interrupting a religious ceremony held in a private hospital room over a dying patient, you need to seek professional help.

Nobody is persecuting you or your family's pitiable beliefs.

I agree that No one's beliefs are immune from being questioned.

Similarly, no one's beliefs are immune from being mocked.

He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy! :p

Seems to me that the video makes fun of the idea that prayer has actual healing power.

I don't see it making fun of someone who, for instance, realizes that intercessory prayer doesn't work, but still finds personal value in it.

There's nothing silly about prayer at all...unless you think it actually works.

Brandon Muller said...

By the way, most every Christian with whom I've discussed the efficacy of prayer eventually retreats to the idea that prayer has no actual power beyond simply strengthening the bind between them and God.

So, many Christians, when pinned down, realize that prayer (in terms of making God do something he wasn't going to do) does not work.

And yet these same Christians pray like it does! *Sigh*

Jeremy,
I didn't claim anyone is automagically worthy of respect. But I do have my own right to assert something as disrespectful, do I not? Both you and Boz attack my right to assert such things, and the others, again, mock my beliefs. Pretty good strong character, I'd say.
As for Jeremy commenting that I need professional help by comparing this video to disrupting a real situation of prayer over a dying person, I disagree. The modern age of technology is the only thing that makes a video like this possible. And suddenly you are the one that gives it a category of itself - immune from hurting anyone, immune from actually mocking anyone, immune from having any real substance? Oh, it's just 'acting' right? Well, yes, thanks to technology, these folks don't have to be accountable to what they say and do. I understand that so I'll pass on the shrink. But my point was to draw a parallel that their main point, if brought up in the real-life situation, would be the same hurtful point. And I just don't see the gain.

Double A said...

Now, just think if an atheist replied to my point: Yes, I could see how this could be hurtful to someone who believes. And sorry to hear about your brother.

But we don't see that 'round herrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

But ya'll are so compassionate. You don't need a God for that, right?

Metalsmith said...

"I didn't claim anyone is automagically worthy of respect."

Neither did I. Your reading comprehension fails.

"Both you and Boz attack my right to assert such things,"

Your reading comprehension still fails you. We are not attacking your right to say stupid things.

If your beliefs can't withstand criticism or mockery they're just not that strong are they?

"But my point was to draw a parallel that their main point, if brought up in the real-life situation, would be the same hurtful point."

Then you should have drawn a parallel situation instead of a blatant exaggeration which can only make you look even more foolish.

Awww poor baby! If you're throwing a pity party can I bring friends. He's got a really good faith healer and raise the dead act with zombies and realistic artificial blood and gore.

Irony Award Of The Week: A Christian looking for sympathy from people who are regularly told they're going to burn in Hell.

Boz said...

Double A, if you feel ofended by someone questioning or mocking your beliefs, then you are too sensitive.

I do see how this could be hurtful to someone who believes.

That said, if you and I self-censored our speech due to the possibility that someone, somehere might be offended, we would never say anything.

A balance needs to be found between free speech and sensitivity to others. I value free speech far more highly than your or my delicate sensibilities.

Brandon Muller said -->"There's nothing silly about prayer at all...unless you think it actually works."

Exactly ...Except for maybe the fact that some folk "do" actually think prayer works, leading to some refusing scientific medication, in preference to prayer even if it happens to cause death.Which even seems a kinda "silly" thing for folks to keep "letting happen".And is why its so important we now have the new atheist movement.

Double A said -->"But ya'll are so compassionate. You don't need a God for that, right?"

That is really great perception you use at that point right there Double A....No gods are not needed for compassion.

We atheists are showing "compassion" for those who`s lives are often being foolishly wasted,(through some folks ignorant preference of having faith in prayer)as a way of healing. And so part of the action that follows the athiest compassion for those who wrongfully lose their lives through such ignorance.

Is we atheists ridicule the extreme ignorance of these prayer healings!.

Double A, ridicule actually has its place in our society. We use it often.

Even at home with our own children, parents might "first" start with discussion and debate about whats logic and reasonable. If that dont work! "next step" might be sometimes silly things DO need to be exposed of obviously being silly and ridiculus, and thats part of what ridicule is all about Double A.

The above steps are ofen used first to try to avoid any danger or harm or anger etc.Its all a "very important" part of our human survival.

I suggest it really is a great display of some of the very best evidence of humans actually being "honestly" compassionate. When they ridicule things like ancient prayer that is long overdue ridicule and disrespect! being widely known to really only be old ignorant superstition!, which should not be (promoted) as being useful to (heal)etc when its not.

Christians should really be ridiculing it too!,unless they dont care about those many lives being wasted by wothless use of relying on unproven cure by prayer.

Christians need to forget the old high horse mentality, and stop bleating about persecution! thats actually not happening..Start thinking more about what good reasons the ridicule is happening.

I agree with Boz -->"A balance needs to be found between free speech and sensitivity to others."

For that reason this is a very excellent video.

I value free speech as well. I'm not saying you SHOULD NOT have said those things. But when I said it was disrespectful I was accurate. And you said I was not. Buck up and just say, yes, it was disrespectful. Just like from your perspective it is disrespectful for Christians to tell you you are going to hell.
Jeremy, you attack my reading comprehension? LMFAO.

Double A said...

Most of you base your responses to anyone like me on the laundry list of stigma built into your heads with regard to Christianity. That is narrow, but very human.

Boz said...

Double A, you need thicker skin.

This was disrespectful to one of your opinions, it was not disrespectful to you as a person.

Many Christians NEED TO TAKE A CHILL PILL or better yet LEARN HOW TO CHILL!!

ps I know what I say is true from experience as I was a Christian for 31 years before I woke up to truth!!

LOL ... so we have
1: a couple of clowns with no knowledge of Christianity, doctrine, or God
2: pretending by way of farce, arrogance, and a most ridiculous form of prayer that even benny hinn would be embarrassed to render from within that synagogue of satan
3: thinking that they will prove that prayer is not effective with the bizarre and utterly incredulous

then there are these other luny-bin atheists running round throwing muck on some poor dude, all the while thinking that this video is actually sarcastic and makes fun of something ... rotf ... you guys are nutters

you cannot make a point if the discourse itself is nothing but fiction and utterly ridiculous

you gunna have to do a lot better than this school-yard muck to actually get anyone thinking anything else than that you guys are intellectually challenged to say the least
