Which Christian Has Done the Most For Atheism in 2009?

This poll was suggested to me by Craig A. James and it's a good one. This time before starting the poll I'd like your input. I have Ray Comfort, Dinesh D'Souza (a friend of mine I'll admit), James White, Oral Roberts, Ken Hamm, and possibly JP Holding. Were there any high profile scandals I'm missing, or others you'd like to see included? Other nominees can be suggested below. Tell me why you think they should be included.

Not entirely what you were looking for perhaps, but i nominate the Catholic Church. Coming as i do from Ireland, i can assure no single Christian can match the RCC for generating absolute disgust in religion - surely a boon for atheism.

I think that some of the Reformed Epistemologists have helped out atheism with their critiques of the arguments for God's existence.

oops! I see that it was for 2009. Sorry I don't know.

Sort of agree with 3Finker.

But I'd rephrase it to say that the Christians amongst the people (both victims and investigators) responsible for the Irish RCC abuse report have done the most for Atheism.

This may not fit either, but I have to nominate Islam. Now that the Western world has gotten a taste of widespread fundamental literalist beliefs, they can now see what their own religion would like if given power and taken seriously. Since Islam is not a person, I have to nominate book theif and plagarist Ray Cumfart.

I am going to have to go with either Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin, for being a perfect example of an extremist lunatic, or Pope Benedict XVI, for his series of intolerant or dangerous proclamations(condoms, homophobia, Richard Williamson pardon, beautification of Pius XII, Caritas in Veritate).

The hypocrisy of SO MANY Christians makes the list quite long!! The fact that there are so many entries should give Christians pause-but won't.

i would say Jp Holding, for the most part one of the worst apologists I have ever heard

How strong can your case really be when you are a prick most of the time about others arguements

John there is an interesting article in the Jan issue of Sci. American. It discusses what chemistry would be like if there was no weak nuclear force. They explain how and why there would still be organic chemistry and possibly life. Might be useful against Dinesh. Will this debate be online?

I have been thinking about this question off and on today and I don't think any christians did anything to help atheism. I got to wondering what would christians from a different denomination or sect think of the people have been listed here and any of the others not listed yet. I figure most of the christians will use the negative events to point out how the devil can be very powerful if you aren't on your guard. They won't throw their faith off unless they were already headed that way anyway.

I'd always love to pin it on a creationist because I want to believe that those who lie and mislead would lead people to reject such doctrines on rational grounds, but in reality I'd foster a guess that it's those who show the backwards nature of religion in the face of societal and moral progress. In Australia, we have George Pell.

Though if I were to vote, it would probably be Sarah Palin for embodying religious stupidity that the whole world is laughing at (though maybe thanking God that she didn't get elected - it's hard to tell with her)

I guess you haven't read Jesus words on the hypocrisy of some Jewish Pharisees, and how their hypocrisy discredited the entire Pharisaical movement.

Read Matthew 23, where Jesus is made to call people 'sons of Hell'.

Bigotry?
